One amazing place is La Vida Magica, a three-bedroom bed and breakfast tucked inside a traditional historic building. With its tile flooring and plaster walls as well as a full sized pool and manicured courtyard. You can’t go wrong here. In fact, you will love this house so much it will get you looking at real estate listings online and considering how to keep your job while working remotely. It’s so magical you will want to find a place just like it that you can call your own.
Whether you’re moving in or on vacation (and staying at La Vida Magica), here’s how to do Merida like a local:
Getting around
Merida is huge but you will most likely spend your time in downtown (where La Vida Magica is!). You can walk almost everywhere but when it’s hot here, it’s HOT. Instead, rely on Uber which is very inexpensive. For longer trips, like to the Mayan ruins, you can rent a car at the airport.
Local food
Restaurants to hit early in the day are more casual places and are often only open for breakfast and lunch. These are local walk-in restaurants that serve local favorites like huevos motulenos and zesty ceviches. Street food is pretty much everywhere and is safe to eat. Most food stalls operate in the same way: they make big batches of guisos, open early in the morning and serve until they sell out. There are so many choices that you would need to move here to check it all out.
A day trip worth taking
The Mayan ruins of Uxmal, about an hour’s drive from Merida, are as grand as Chichen Itza but not nearly as overrun by tourists. You can hire an English-speaking guide on site but much of the charm is to simply wander through the complex of Mayan buildings and feel the magic. This is the place locals choose if they want to take a day trip and soak in some of their own culture.
There is no other place in Mexico quite like Merida in all its grandeur and beauty. If you have never been here, visit La Vida Magica and make this your home base while you spend time in this wonderful city. Once you visit you will fall in love with this city and will quickly want to find a house of your own to purchase and move right into. For the best way to stay, choosing a bed and breakfast in Merida is the only way to go. We invite you to come and stay awhile.
