Living Large In Merida Mexico
Living it up in Merida

Away from Mexico’s bright white beaches is another alternative. There is a colorful town tucked away in the Yucatan region that is just starting to get recognition. It is a small, big town that is somewhat run down but still a grand city. The colonial city of Merida was once home to some of the greatest wealth in the world. If you are looking for a grand trip to Mexico, consider this quaint town full of culture and history and with many house rentals and bed and breakfasts in Merida, you can live like a local while experiencing all that this city has to offer.
Barons of the 19th century hired Parisian architects to build pristine villas along Paseo de Montejo. Merida, the inland capital of Mexico’s beach-famous Yucatan was not considered an important city. It isn’t packed with visitors and perhaps this is what makes it so charming. You tend not to feel like a tourist here, specifically for this reason. The historical center is simply known as “Centro” and is not always easy to spot. This area of town still houses cobblestone streets and many dilapidated buildings. Behind the facades of these buildings, however, lie many restored and newly built homes. You will see newly painted white facades next to a terracotta one with peeling shutters. All, however, are secured by old iron bars.
When the owners of the bed and breakfast, Vida Magica, visited Merida for a wedding, they quickly fell in love with the charm and serene feeling this city had to offer. They quickly took the opportunity to buy into this fading glamor that is Merida. Merida has become a destination to live in rather than visit for many Americans and other expats. Having the homeowners living at the bed and breakfast has many advantages like a home-cooked breakfast or the security of knowing people are there to look after you.
When the owners first purchased Vida Magica, it had already been restored inside an old commercial building. All that was left was for them to put their personal touches on it. When you walk inside, you can still sense the building of yesteryear. The tiled floors are over 100 years old but are in such perfect shape that you would swear they are brand new. Modern amenities like Wi-Fi and an updated, fully functional kitchen add convenience to the home while still maintaining the old-world charm.
Vida Magica is conceived of the idea that life is magical and we all need to slow down once in a while and enjoy all that this life has to offer us. For the owners of Vida Magica, this house is their magical place to love, laugh and live in. If you are visiting Merida, consider staying at a bed and breakfast like Vida Magica (or Vida Magica itself!) and discover the magic that awaits you. Once you step inside you won’t ever want to leave.
