Things To Do While Visiting in Merida
Top Things to do in Merida
Merida is the largest city in the Yucatan but it doesn’t have a big-city vibe in the least. It is a delightful town and there are so many things to see and do. Merida gives off a European feel but it is still very much Mexico. Colorful pastels blend with historic charm along the streets. You will always be only a few blocks away from a city square where there is likely some event going on. Tourists love Merida, locals cherish it. You can combine the best of both worlds and rent a house in Merida.
Merida locals are very friendly, the food is delicious, the nightlife is jamming and the rental homes sprinkled around town are amazing. If you are planning a trip to Merida, there is so much to do.
Visit Museums
If you want to learn more about the Mayan people and culture, you will find it in Merida. Gran Museo de Mundo Maya (Museum of the Mayan World) begins with Mayan history and is filled with over 500 artifacts to help give you a deeper understanding of this civilization. It is a great way to start if you plan on visiting some of the ancient Mayan sites that dot the surrounding area.
Dancing in the streets
There is always something going on in Merida, including the popular local weekly events where people literally dance in the streets! On weekend nights a few of the main streets in the city are closed to traffic and the city goes wild. Sidewalk cafes set up in the streets, stages are erected in the plazas and free concerts take place. Salsa music belts out from the bars and people begin to break out in dance.
Cathedral
You can’t come to Mexico and not visit a church or two. Catedral de San Ildefonso was built in the late 1500s and is an architectural marvel. There is even an English speaking service that occurs here on Sundays at 9:00 am.
Take a break
Among things to do in Merida, sometimes not doing anything at all can be an adventure. The Plaza Grande is the perfect place to take a break in the center of town to absorb all of the beautiful ambiances. Many Meridians and tourists alike congregate during the day and evening to unwind. It is a great place to soak in the culture and people watch. Food vendors set up along the edge so you can indulge in a little snack as well.
Eat, drink and be merry
Eating and drinking in Mexico are considered things to do! Mexicans are so passionate about their food and drink that it is an experience and an adventure all in one. Be sure to try the local cuisine because there are huge regional differences here compared to other areas in Mexico.
And if you happen to be on Calle 71 por 78 y 76, be sure to grab grub from two of my favorite truly local fooderies! Breakfast and dinner can be had at El Buen Comer, a cocina economica or cheap kitchen. The menu changes often and everything is as fresh as can be and it’s very inexpensive! Ask for Isabel and tell her Howard sent you!
And for dinner or a late night snack, check out the sandwich cart operated by Humberto. Hotdogs, hamburgers, and sandwiches of all kinds all made to your liking. He’s usually out in the street from about 7:30 until midnight. Tell him “El Mago Americano” sent you!
Where to stay
When thinking about a place to stay, consider the idea to rent a house in Merida. There are many places to stay but the best house here is La Vida Magica. Check out the pictures and description of this gorgeous, modern house and we are sure you will want to stay nowhere else. Hotels have nothing on this house and staying in a house allows you the freedom and privacy to truly get the most out of your vacation to this wonderful Mexican town.
